pleasantly surprised
I got this on discount from co-op, and was really surprised. recognised it from reviews and was very nice, noticed the taste hung in the mouth for quite a a long time. however, when i opened it, i poured glasses quickly, and the taste changed more noticeably than other wines by the end of the bottle. next time will leave to breathe for a little; for more consistent experience. good weekday wine

A Rioja to die for...
Baron de Ley 7 Viñas Rioja 2001 by Milton Thornaby I'm not usually a great lover of Rioja, or indeed any other brownish reds, but I furiously adore this wine. My wine merchant tells me it's made from seven varieties of grape, and I have no reason to doubt him, although he has in the past miscounted grapes in a number of varieties of Rioja. Baron de Ley's spicy, tangy character gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling, and its aftertaste is as miraculously long as a childhood summer holiday on a sunny beach in Skegness. The nose is deep, crunchy oak leaves and Ribena, with a hint of turmeric and cat litter. I drank my bottle on a patio overlooking the Avenue of Stars in Kowloon. I wipe away a tear as I write this.

Poor man's Bordeaux
Baron de Ley 7 Viñas Rioja 2001. Made from 7 grape varieties. Once fermented, it's aged for 3 years in oak barrels before being matured for a further year in traditional oak foudre. IWSC 2007 Trophy. Aye. Decant this wine 1-2 hours before you plan to drink it. A lovely density of red-black colour, with a brownish hue. On the nose, autumn forest, bilberries, violets, cedar, also some fur and blackcurrants. On the palate, black cherries, bilbery jam and blackcurrants alongside nice spiciness. Perfect acids and tannins. Long aftertaste. Alc. 14.5%. Price: Ł11.99 (reduced from Ł15.99)

Baron De Ley Rioja 2003
Outstanding wine! I shared a bottle at my WSET wine course and immediately dashed to purchase a case. Well worth the effort.

Delicious
Had this over a meal with family over Christmas - FAB!! Very smooth and full bodied and excellent value for money, not usually someone who buys Rioja so was swayed by the silver medal, well worth the £8 we paid will buy again.

nice but overpriced
Rioja doesn't come cheap but this means you pay about two quid over the odds. Good spicy character which goes well with red meat, rich, but leaves you a bit short - there should be more depth to it
